Steven Jackson

Youth Network activist

Steven is a member of Global Justice Now's youth group, Our Future Now. He first got involved with activism in 2016, uncoincidentally at the same time he dropped out of University. He didn’t feel his degree was relevant to the global struggles of today. Since then he's worked in the Third Sector, for a youth social inclusion charity and now an International Development NGO, whilst volunteering and pursuing activism with multiple radical organisations. Steven increasingly spends all of my free time engrossed in politics and hopes to be studying International Relations at the University of Sussex, come September.

My week at the Black Lives Matter protests

I had a bit of a moral conundrum over attending last week’s Black Lives Matter protests. How responsible was it to attend a mass gathering during a pandemic disproportionately affecting the BAME community and other minority groups? Ultimately I decided it was too important to sit out, particularly for those of us with the privilege of being able to make that choice.  The week wasan important reminder of the solidarity and empowerment many of us feel - maybe uniquely - at protests. Not to mention the work that we must all be doing to support an anti-racist movement.
