In response to the news that the Oxford University vaccine shows 70% protection, Heidi Chow, pharmaceuticals campaigner at Global Justice Now said:

“These results are good news, but with so much government funding for this vaccine, it is time Oxford University’s deal with pharma giant AstraZeneca was made public. Individual parts have been leaked to the media, but the deal itself has been kept secret, so we don’t know the legal framework for making the vaccine available to the world.

  • Just 12% of global population stand to receive majority of doses

  • Vaccine has received billions in public funding

The vast majority of pharma company Moderna’s Covid-19 vaccine has already been bought by the richest governments in the world, Global Justice Now warns today. 780 million doses have already been sold to rich governments, 78% of the 1 billion doses Moderna says it has the capacity to produce by the end of next year.(1)

Reacting to reports that early phase 3 trials of Pfizer's Covid-19 vaccine have been 90% successful, Heidi Chow, pharmaceuticals campaigner at Global Justice Now said:

“It’s positive news that Pfizer may have found an effective Covid-19 vaccine, but right now it will only be for the few. We need governments to step in and make it available for the many – including by suspending patent rights.

Survivors of Covid-19 from 37 countries are among almost 1,000 people who have signed an open letter to pharmaceutical industry leaders calling for a ‘people’s vaccine’ and treatments that are available to all – free from patents. The letter comes on the eve of a high-level side event about the pandemic at the UN General Assembly in New York tomorrow (30 September).

Public health and social justice organisations have warned that the government’s latest deal to secure advanced supplies of potential Covid-19 vaccines for the UK will fuel the global scramble to hoard vaccines by rich countries. The government’s move to purchase 60 million doses of a potential vaccine from pharmaceutical giants GlaxoSmithKlein and Sanofi for the UK, undermines global efforts to ensure fair and world-wide access to Covid-19 vaccines.

Patient groups have joined with campaigners to ask AstraZeneca for full disclosure of their plans to develop a coronavirus vaccine with Oxford University, outlining the need for vaccines to be patent-free. [1]

The British pharmaceutical company has recently signed a deal with Oxford University to produce the vaccine and has already received orders from the UK and US governments. [2]

Global Justice Now today criticised Health Secretary Matt Hancock for failing to join world leaders in declaring a potential coronavirus vaccine to be a ‘public good’, and instead acting as a cheerleader for the pharmaceutical industry at the World Health Assembly, which concludes today.

Coronavirus is killing the poor far more than the rich. A vaccine must be free for everyone

Pneumonia is killing 2,000 people every day. But not because of coronavirus. For nearly twenty years, millions of children have not had access to the patented vaccine manufactured by Pfizer and GlaxoSmithKline due to its high cost, which has generated billions in profit for those corporations.
