The food sovereignty movement is a global alliance of farmers, growers, consumers and activists.

Victory for land reform campaigners

On 3 October, 60,000 people from India’s poor and tribal communities embarked on Jan Satyagraha (“March for Justice”), a 350 km month-long march from Gwalior in the north of the country to the national capital Dehli to press their demands for their rights to land, forest, water and natural resources for food supply. Last week, on 11 October, in response to the protest the government decided to introduce significant land reform policy change and in light of this victory the march was called off.

WDM’s campaign to curb speculation on food tackles one aspect of a broken food system. We’re also helping to build a movement for a just global food system, inspired by activists in the global south.

The global food system is in crisis. Globally we are now producing more food than ever before. But while 1.5 billion people are overweight, 870 million people are affected by chronic hunger. Small-scale farmers are suffering from prices falling below their costs of production due to unfair trade regimes, corporate concentration and the dismantling of state support.

Today sees the launch of A People’s Food Policy – a ground-breaking manifesto outlining a people’s vision of food and farming in England that is supported by over 80 food and farming organisations. The report draws on 18 months of extensive, nation-wide consultations with grassroots organisations, NGOs, trade unions, community projects, small businesses and individuals. It has resulted in a set of policy proposals and a vision for change that is rooted in the lived experiences and needs of people most affected by the failures in the current food system.

Responding to the news that Monsanto had accepted a takeover offer from Bayer, and would potentially create the world's biggest seed and pesticide company, Aisha Dodwell, a food campaigner from Global Justice Now said:

Food sovereignty activists protest a secret elite meeting being held in London convened by the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation (BMGF) and the United States Agency for International Development (USAID).
