At Brighton’s fifth youth strike a colourful banner proclaiming ‘Colonialism + Capitalism = Climate Breakdown’ led the front of the march. Young people from across the city had gathered a few days earlier to design and paint the banner.

Another day, another Trump tweet. Sad! This time the president of the United States, Donald Trump, attacked the Prime Minister of Denmark, Mette Frederiksen, for not wanting to sell him Greenland. Describing the ‘offer’ as “absurd”, Frederiksen joined Trump’s list of ‘nasty women’ as he swiftly cancelled his upcoming state visit to Denmark as a result.

Late night on Sunday 4 August, India-occupied Kashmir went into lockdown. Mobile, internet and TV connections were shut down, public meetings and rallies prohibited, schools and public institutions closed, and state leaders placed under house arrest.

Colonialism, borders and justice should be in our conversation about migration

In opposing the hostile environment for immigrants, we must link the root causes of poverty and inequality around the world with the rise of migration. The failure to understand and communicate the role of neoliberalism in causing the collapse of working and living conditions in countries of the North has driven anti-migrant sentiments.
