How Britain’s trade relations with Israel risk fuelling war crimes

Over the last 18 months, Israel has been accused of the most serious war crimes. At the International Court of Justice (ICJ) Israel faces claims of genocide in Gaza, while a separate ICJ case in July found that Israel’s occupation policies in the West Bank amount to apartheid.

Both cases place significant obligations on states like the UK. The government must ensure it is not helping maintain Israel’s illegal occupation and that it has taken all steps to prevent a genocide, including through its economic relationships. We believe it has failed to take these steps, and that by continuing to engage in trade talks focused on areas of Israel’s economy which are most directly engaged with severe human rights abuses, it risks exacerbating this failure.
