The dangers of the US trade deal
Type: Campaign briefings, MP briefings
Date: 29 April 2025
Campaigns: Trade
The British government is negotiating a trade deal with the US administration which threatens important standards and regulations. This deal is being negotiated behind closed doors, but we know the US is interested in securing greater agricultural and pharmaceutical access to our markets – both of which threaten our standards and public services, and are deeply unpopular with the British public.
This briefing focuses, however, on what we know is definitely on the agenda for both governments: the liberalisation of digital and high tech sectors, including AI. This in itself poses risks to online safety, competition policy, patient data, consumer safety and attempts to build a UK-based industry.
This two-page briefing is aimed at parliamentarians, but is also a short summary of the issues for campaigners.
