MSP Briefing: the Fossil Fuel Non-Proliferation Treaty

MSP Briefing: the Fossil Fuel Non-Proliferation Treaty

Type: Campaign briefings
Date: 8 June 2023
Campaigns: Climate

The Fossil Fuel Non-Proliferation Treaty is a bold idea spearheaded by a group of Pacific Island nations. It’s gaining support fast, from parliamentarians, academics, civil society organisations  and individuals around the world who recognise the urgent need for a global effort focused on a fast, fair and managed phase out of oil, gas and coal. The proposal for a treaty has also been endorsed by the European Parliament, the WHO and the state legislatures of California, Hawaii and the Australian Capital Territory.

Scotland has shown it can be influential on the world stage with its call for a Loss and Damage fund at COP26 and 27, in which it broke the taboo among the rich countries and successfully got the proposal for the fund onto the agenda of the UN climate talks.

We’re calling on the Scottish government to do the same thing again now by publicly endorsing the proposal for a Fossil Fuel Non-Proliferation Treaty.
