Lobbying your MP to support the Fossil Fuel Treaty

Support for a Fossil Fuel Non-Proliferation Treaty is growing around the world, including among parliamentarians from a huge range of countries. In the UK, MPs various parties have publicly supported the treaty, but there are many with whom the issue has not yet been raised by constituents. Global Justice Now groups and individual supporters can help further the campaign by raising it with their MP.

Parliamentary briefing

While our main campaign briefing is designed to give campaigners a good overview of the treaty, we’ve also produced a shorter document aimed to MPs who may have limited time. You can send this directly to your MP.

Early Day Motion 111

Thanks to our local group Global Justice York, Rachael Maskell MP has now put down an Early Day Motion (EDM) about the treaty. This is a kind of parliamentary petition that other MPs can sign during the parliamentary session 2024-25. Check if your MP has already signed the EDM, and if not, this can be part of your ask.

Parliamentarians for a Fossil Fuel-Free Future

If your MP is supportive of the treaty, they could also sign the global parliamentarians’ call for a fossil-free future, which has been initiated by the Fossil Fuel Treaty Initiative.

Seeking a meeting

As the example of York shows, it can be useful to seek a meeting with your MP to discuss the treaty and what they can do to support a just transition. If you’d like advice on doing this, email [email protected]. Don’t forget we also have materials to support your campaigning. In addition to our main campaign briefing, you can also read our tricky questions briefing to help really get to grips with the proposal.
