Campaign in Wales for a Fossil Fuel Treaty

Campaign in Wales for a Fossil Fuel Treaty

The Fossil Fuel Non-Proliferation Treaty is a bold idea from civil society organisations, parliamentarians and individuals around the world who recognise the urgent need for a fast, fair and managed global phase out of oil, gas and coal.

Fourteen countries from four different continents have already endorsed the treaty and the call for a treaty is being led by those countries most affected by climate change already – the Pacific islands states Vanuatu, Tuvalu, Fiji and Tonga. It has also been endorsed by the European Parliament and the World Health Organisation.

In order to eventually get the UK government to endorse a much-needed Fossil Fuel Treaty, we need a rising tide of political actors at all levels to come out in support of a treaty first. More than 100 councils and cities across the world have now backed the Fossil Fuel Non-Proliferation Treaty including councils in Edinburgh, London and Brighton. We believe that the Welsh government, having already committed itself in several ways to taking climate action, could be convinced to endorse the treaty, which would then put serious pressure on the Westminster government to do the same. We’re calling on the first minister of Wales to publicly endorse the call for a Fossil Fuel Treaty.
