What’s power got to do with it?
Date: 13 October 2014
This week we hope to see climate change hit the news again. Not because of another catastrophic weather event but because activists from around the world are taking part in a week of action against the dirty energy companies and institutions that fuel climate change.
According to the latest report by the UN, time is running out to avoid dangerous temperature rises by 2030. At the same time, one in five people globally live without electricity. This is because governments and institutions like the World Bank continue to impose a model of development that hands control of energy systems over to multinational companies that prioritise profit over the needs of people.
The result is energy injustice: billions of people without basic energy access and the continued dependence on dirty fossil fuels. We need to “Reclaim Power” and demand democratically-controlled, alternative energy solutions.
WDM activists have joined with groups across the world to launch actions against the most harmful forms of energy. Together, during the Reclaim Power week of action, we are sending a clear message that our struggle for a just energy system is part of a strong international movement.
