United Nations needs to enact “transformative change” at General Assembly, campaigners say

As the 78th United Nations General Assembly is set to convene today in New York, Nick Dearden, director of Global Justice Now, said:

“The world is massively off track. There’s no point setting targets if you’re not prepared to change the rules and institutions creating inequality, poverty, conflict and environmental destruction. There is a growing recognition that hyper-globalisation has undermined our social cohesion and democracy.

“We need a radically new system – our current economic model rewards the super-rich and the corporations that make them wealthy, over the collective interests of people across the world. It’s time for the UN to enact truly transformative change – and bring about a new settlement which puts ordinary people and our environment first.”
