UK’s past green light to Mozambique gas project “beyond egregious”, campaigners say

Date: 9 October 2024
Campaigns: Climate

Responding to news that the previous government pushed through funding for TotalEnergies Mozambique gas project, Izzie McIntosh, climate campaigner at Global Justice Now said:

Handing out billions in taxpayers’ money to fund fossil fuel projects is inherently unacceptable. But that this was given the green light while there was full knowledge that it could be driving armed conflict is beyond egregious – Truss risked directly contributing to horrific human rights violations for the sake of propping up a toxic industry. This government must immediately suspend all loans and guarantees to UK exporters and banks which are continuing to support TotalEnergies gas project. And long term, public money must never be used to fund fossil fuels, at a time when our focus needs to be on investing in green energy to secure our collective futures.”
