UK-USA trade talks start on Monday – “No mandate for Fox’s free-market mania”

In advance of the UK starting unofficial trade talks with the USA in Washington on Monday to start discussing the details of a potential UK-USA trade deal after Brexit, Nick Dearden the director of Global Justice Now said:
“It’s extremely worrying that Liam Fox is starting to hammer out the details of a trade deal that will have enormous consequences for everyone in the UK with absolutely nothing in the way of democratic oversight. Fox is infamous for leaning heavily towards free market extremes, and this will inevitably inform any sort of UK-USA trade deal.
“So it’s not going to be about lowering tariffs – it will be about stripping away vital labour and environmental protections, and offering public services like the NHS up to the enormous private sector in the USA. Fox has no mandate to do this whatsoever, and the reason these deals are happening in utmost secrecy is because the public would be up in arms if they were aware that that was what was happening.”
