UK must join exodus from fossil fuel treaty after reforms fail

Date: 22 November 2022
Campaigns: Climate, Trade

Reacting to the failure of the Energy Charter Secretariat to vote through ‘modernising’ reforms to the Energy Charter Treaty today, Jean Blaylock, trade campaigner at Global Justice Now said:

“Today’s vote on ‘reforms’ to try and patch together the pieces of the Energy Charter Treaty has been cancelled after it became clear it would be lost. It’s obvious to everyone now that it is broken past the point of fixing. The UK has already said it cannot support such a high-risk treaty as it is. Other countries are now just voting with their feet.

With so many countries already committed to leaving, this climate-wrecking treaty is collapsing.

The UK must now join the exodus, otherwise, it will be left behind in the wreckage bearing all the risk while others get out. The UK needs to take action to protect the planet and the future by exiting the Energy Charter Treaty.”
