UK-India FTA: Trade deal could “jeopardise access to affordable medicine”, campaigners say

Responding to news that the UK-India trade talks are to re-launch in the new year, Nick Dearden, director of Global Justice Now said:

Leaked documents have shown Britain to be pushing India to accept Big Pharma demands in this trade deal. These demands would jeopardise peoples’ access to affordable medicine around the world – from the global south to our NHS. We have no idea whether these demands are still on the table because Labour is continuing to negotiate in secret.

“The government needs to suspend these Boris Johnson-era talks, and set out its objectives to parliament and the public. Otherwise we will find ourselves locked into a trade treaty which is a bad deal for the NHS, and a bad deal for people in need of healthcare across the world.”
