“Trade that supports the dignity of all”- Labour’s new trade initiative
Date: 26 September 2016
Global Justice Now welcomes the announcement of the Just Trade policy by shadow trade secretary Barry Gardiner MP at Labour Party conference this morning. Nick Dearden, the director of Global Justice Now said:
“We are delighted that Labour agrees with us that the toxic trade deals TTIP and CETA are an affront to our democracy and dignity. We also agree that the government’s desire to join the secret TISA deal is about giving more power to the world’s oligarchs
“We need a completely different approach to trade – one which isn’t about making wealth on the backs of people elsewhere. Trade needs to to be based on improving the living standards of all involved, giving more people dignified lives and supporting small business and farmers. It also needs to be thoroughly democratic in how we go about creating our trade system. The Just Trade initiative is a great step in this direction. We hope this is the beginning of a national conversation about how we trade and with whom.”
