Sun, scenery and social justice

Date: 20 August 2012

Earlier this summer, three intrepid and inspiring WDM supporters – Keith, Matt and Kate – walked the 95 miles of the West Highland Way. From the outskirts of Glasgow to the foot of Ben Nevis, this spectacular route is not without its challenges.

Their motivation? To have fun, take in some stunning views and, of course, to support the fight for global justice by raising vital funds for WDM’s campaigns.

Here is what Keith had to say about the experience:

“I have just completed the West Highland Way and am tired, brown, midge bitten and very happy. Whilst it was a challenge, the experience was great and the organisation of the walk smooth and easy going. The other walkers, none of whom I had met before, were a delight (walkers are!).

I can’t fault the walk organisers, Charitytrek. Our guide, Steve, was interesting, great fun, and a good source of much needed encouragement on the longer 20 mile day. Ian, the day to day organiser, was helpful and optimistic, sorting out anything that arose. Spotting his cheery face at lunchtime or at the end of the day was always a pleasure, signifying a welcome break. Except for an espresso machine on the back of the van, I don’t see how they could have organised a better week.

My friends and family have also been great, getting behind me to help me reach and surpass my fundraising target (even after I increased it!). Perhaps it was bribing them with a postcard that helped, or perhaps it was because they know what a fantastic cause WDM is (if they didn’t before, they certainly do now!).

So if anyone reading this is looking for a challenge and wants to know if I would recommend this one, the answer has to be a resounding yes! I had a fantastic time, met some great people, saw some breathtaking scenery and got to do all of this whilst helping WDM fight for justice for the world’s poor at the same time. What more could you ask for (other than that espresso machine of course)?”

WDM would like to say a huge ‘thank you’ and ‘congratulations’ to Keith and his fellow walkers Matt and Kate. We are inspired by the amazing job they have done raising over £2600, money which will go towards fighting the root causes of poverty and winning positive change for the world’s poor.

If you feel inspired by Keith you can sponsor him online or alternatively find out more information on walking the West Highland Way for WDM yourself or on any of our other challenges at our sponsored events page or by calling 0800 328 2153 and speaking to Debby.
