Rwanda ruling reaction: We will not build a fairer society by punishing those who most need our support

Today, the High Court has ruled that the UK government’s plan to send asylum seekers to Rwanda is legal.

Nick Dearden, our Global Justice Now director, responds:

We don’t have a ‘migrant crisis’ in Britain, we have a government crisis. The deep crises we’re living through have not been caused by asylum seekers, but by successive governments.

In fact, those seeking refuge here are, all too often, also victims of those same governments, fleeing war and conflict, dispossession and exploitation that’s resulted from Britain’s foreign and economic policy.

It is sickening to see Sunak’s government now using desperate people as a political football in this way. We will not build a fairer society by punishing those who most need our support.
