Rishi Sunak oil license announcement: precisely the opposite of what the climate emergency requires

Date: 31 July 2023
Campaigns: Climate

Commenting on Rishi Sunak’s visit to Scotland and announcement of 100 oil and gas exploration licenses, Liz Murray head of Scottish campaigns at Global Justice Now said:

Last week saw huge profit announcements from oil and gas companies who are making obscene amounts of money from the climate emergency that they are in large part responsible for.

Today, instead of doing what’s needed to ensure a liveable climate by phasing out fossil fuels, we see Rishi Sunak here in Scotland doing precisely the opposite by announcing plans for 100 oil and gas exploration licenses.

What is actually needed is a meaningful tax on fossil fuel companies for reparations they owe for the loss and damage caused by climate change, particularly to countries in the global south; an end to the crazy system of subsidies to the fossil fuel industry; and UK support for a global Fossil Fuel Non-Proliferation Treaty to plan a fast, fair and financed phase-out of fossil fuels.

The Scottish Government need to put clear blue water between themselves and this irresponsible UK Government by condemning these plans for oil and gas licenses and publicly endorsing a global plan for the phase-out of fossil fuels.”
