Reaction to new COP28 global stocktake text: “If this is the best negotiators can do, COP28 is heading for disaster”

Izzie McIntosh, climate campaign manager at Global Justice Now said:

“This latest text gravely fails to provide the step forward we desperately need. If this is the best negotiators can do then COP28 is heading for disaster. Any mention of a full fossil fuel phase-out has been deleted – this should not even be debatable at this stage of the climate crisis. Glaring loopholes remain which rich countries can simply jump through to evade their obligations. Delegations must redouble their efforts over the next 24 hours to produce a deal that will end fossil fuels in a truly fast, fair and financed way, including rich countries acting first. Too much is at stake to settle for less.”
