Reaction: Call for phasing out fossil fuels endorsed by fifteen countries

Date: 2 November 2023
Campaigns: Climate

Reacting to the news that fifteen countries across the Global North to South, including France, Spain, Ireland and Kenya, have recently pushed for an end to new oil and gas projects:

Izzie McIntosh, climate campaign manager at Global Justice Now said:

“The call for phasing out fossil fuels is now endorsed by fifteen countries from the Global North to South, including close allies of the UK. That this government has opted instead to go in the complete opposite direction, giving the green light to many new oil and gas fields just this week, reveals their reckless cynicism. Rishi Sunak is knowingly dragging us into climate catastrophe in the face of all scientific, economic and moral sense: endangering communities here and around the world, whilst lining the pockets of oil and gas shareholders. Ahead of COP28, the UK Government can show it is truly serious about securing a liveable future for all by cancelling all the planned oil and gas projects it has approved, and back the call for a global treaty to end fossil fuels in a way that leaves no one behind.”
