Protest at Home Office demands end to hostile environment for immigrants

Migrant solidarity campaigners this morning blocked the entrance to the Home Office in Westminster to demand the government puts a stop to its hostile environment policy towards immigrants, following the resignation of Home Secretary Amber Rudd.
Ahead of a debate in Parliament over the Windrush scandal later today, the campaigners from Global Justice Now and No Borders in Banks unfurled banners saying ‘End the hostile environment’ and ‘No human is illegal’ to make clear that the new Home Secretary, Sajid Javid, must scrap this policy.
Aisha Dodwell of Global Justice Now said:
“The last two weeks have seen an outpouring of sympathy and anger in response to the Windrush scandal, which has brought the daily cruelty of our immigration system out into the open. It could mark a turning point in Britain’s migration debate.
But the root cause of that cruelty is the Prime Minister’s choice to create a hostile environment. This is a deliberate policy being carried out under government orders to weaponise all parts of society against immigrants. But doctors do not have to be border guards, teachers do not have to be border guards, landlords and bank officials do not have to be border guards.
Whoever is Home Secretary, and whoever is Prime Minister, the hostile environment for immigrants has to end now.”
