Commenting on the Scottish Government’s Programme for Government, Liz Murray, head of Scottish campaigns at Global Justice Now said:
While the Scottish Government’s emphasis on global climate justice is commendable, it is strikingly noticeable that this programme for government makes no mention of the root cause of the climate crisis: fossil fuels. Public polling shows that most voters want to see leadership from politicians on climate change, so between now and the Holyrood elections the Scottish Government must accelerate Scotland’s move away from climate wrecking fossil fuels and towards clean energy to strengthen our energy security, lower our bills and create new green jobs. Meanwhile, while it is promising to see initial action on mitigating Trump’s tariffs, the First Minister must follow this up by standing up to Starmer, who is on the brink of surrendering even more of our rights and standards to Trump in a trade deal that could impact our public services, environmental protections and data security. These urgent issues demand more than just a sticking plaster.”
