Responding to development minister Anneliese Dodds’ speech on Monday, Nick Dearden, director of Global Justice Now said:

Pouring aid money into the private sector is not the solution to tackling the huge issues our world faces, from global poverty to the climate crisis. The government’s track record of using aid to help the private sector is littered with overpriced private hospitals, failing private schools and fossil fuel expansion. Too often these projects seem more about aiding financial markets and big business than benefitting the majority of people and the planet. Pushing more under-regulated city investment onto developing countries might make the rich richer, but it won’t make the poor less poor. What we need to see instead is tightly regulated investment that truly benefits developing countries.”
