Pandemic Treaty: “The UK must change course and prioritise human lives over pharmaceutical profits”

Date: 10 May 2024
Campaigns: Pharma

Responding to news the pandemic treaty talks have ended without a draft agreement, Tim Bierley, pharmaceuticals campaigner at Global Justice Now said:

These negotiations have been held back by the UK and other rich nations who refuse to learn the lessons of the Covid-19 pandemic. It was vaccine nationalism and corporate greed that meant billions in the global south lacked access to vaccines, costing countless lives and prolonging the pandemic.

“Yet throughout these talks, the UK has blocked moves to take on the vested interests of big pharma companies and lay the ground for more medicines production in the global south. Where we are born should not dictate our access to lifesaving medicines. Moving forward, the UK must change course and start to prioritise human lives over the profits of pharmaceutical corporations.”
