King’s Speech: Anti-green proposals as ridiculous as they are dangerous, says GJN

Date: 7 November 2023
Campaigns: Climate

Izzie McIntosh, climate campaign manager at Global Justice Now said:

“Rishi Sunak’s version of ‘drill, baby, drill’ in the King’s Speech today is as ridiculous as it is dangerous. This government knows it won’t do anything to bring down people’s bills, and it knows that the increased emissions will drive a coach and horses through its net zero plans, but it’s willing to play politics with all our futures.

“The main thing Sunak will achieve from these plans is raising the cost of the UK’s green transition, by growing the pool of fossil fuel investors looking for compensation when a future government inevitably reverses course. Instead of this climate clickbait, we need to focus on implementing a fast and just green transition that works for ordinary people in the UK and fulfils our responsibilities to the Global South.”
