Join our Global Justice Junk Band
Date: 9 January 2014
Last year we hatched a plan for a samba protest band, which we wanted to wheel out at demos to help make a bit more of a racket and enliven proceedings. We wanted to create something accessible and open and unintimidating for anybody interesed in global justice who’s ever glanced at a drum and thought hitting it might be fun.
Some initial research revealed that the cost of proper samba drums were well beyond our available budget and so, with the help of our fantastic creative activism volunteer, Aisling, we reimagined the protest samba band as the Global Justice Junk Band. Aisling made all of our drums using cast offs, bins and buckets and other drum-like junk found in a Kettering scrapheap, and they sound surprisingly great, especially in concert.
Our next step was to recruit a samba maestro, and we had great fortune in enlisting the services of South London Samba’s. Adam is great and very patient with a group whose skills are quite ranged. So with it all now in place we need to tell people. We’ve got plenty of drums and it’s easy enough to make more. You needn’t turn up with anything but enthusiasm and energy.
We rehearse every other Wednesday at the WDM office (66 Offley Rd, London, SW9 0LS) from 6:30-7:30pm.
