Gaza ceasefire: “Moment must be seized as starting point in seeking true justice for the Palestinian people”, campaigners say

Responding to news of the Gaza ceasefire deal, Tim Bierley, Gaza campaign manager said:

With a ceasefire deal, there are finally signs of respite for the people of Gaza, who have lived under the unspeakable brutality and horror of Israel’s genocidal assault for the last 15 months.

Yet, with Israel now ramping up attacks before the deal comes into effect on Sunday, governments must apply maximum pressure on Israel to bring a permanent end to its assault on Gaza.

Far from using its position to help end the bloodshed, the UK has provided Israel with weapons and diplomatic cover throughout its attacks, even seeking to deepen trade ties with the country amid daily massacres.

While the UK’s role in this atrocity cannot be reversed, Keir Starmer’s government must now work with other countries to prevent further violence, seek justice for Palestinians and address the root cause of the conflict: Israel’s occupation of Palestinian land.

This means pulling every lever necessary to end the occupation, including suspending the UK’s cosy trade relationship with Israel which serves to prop up the illegal occupation, supporting international measures to hold Israel’s leaders to account, and suspending all remaining arms sales to Israel. This moment must be seized as a starting point in seeking true justice for the Palestinian people.”
