Following the conclusion of the Energy Charter Treaty Conference – the ECT’s 34th annual meeting – on Monday 20 November,
Cleodie Rickard, trade campaign manager at Global Justice Now said:
Yet again modernising the ossified Energy Charter Treaty has been taken off the table. We are exactly where we were this time last year and now there are no excuses left. Weak and insufficient from the start, these long-dragged out proposals for reform are proving a dud.
“The UK gave itself a November deadline to consider exiting the treaty if reform isn’t agreed – so we would expect to hear the government announce the UK’s exit with no further delay. With COP28 just around the corner, this is exactly the right moment for a common sense move that both meets our climate obligations to people in the UK and the Global South, and protects the UK from costly litigation.”
