Econo…what? A reading group for the age of austerity
Date: 7 November 2012
Jubilee Debt Campaign along with other organisations including War on Want and the Trade Justice Movement, has launched a new reading group Econo…what? for the age of austerity. The idea is that individuals or groups read selected articles and blog posts and then take part in discussions in groups and online.
Maddy who helped launch the project says:
Those of us who are passionate about global justice know that the economic system lies at the root of poverty and inequality around the world. But I know from my own experience that grappling with economic arguments around debt, austerity and finance can be a real challenge. Jargon can seem complex, I get easily put off by ‘experts’ on the radio and TV, and find it difficult to know where to go to better inform myself about the issues.
That’s why we have launched Econo…what?, a new online reading group for the age of austerity.
The group have collected some of the best articles, chapters and films which will help you get to grips with the basics of the financial crisis. You can take part as an individual or as part of a group, or even get together your own group. The reading is divided into topics, with a readers’ blog to encourage a vibrant online discussion.
This is also a great chance to meet other people in your area who want to take part, building new links with other people who care about similar issues. So get involved now!

We hope these readings will arm you with the knowledge to fight for the radical changes to the economic system we so urgently need. As Jim Stanford says in the first reading: “Economics is too important to leave to the economists”. Knowledge is power.
