COP29 REACTION: Forced-through COP29 text “detached from reality”, campaigners say

Izzie McIntosh, climate campaign manager at Global Justice Now said:
After teetering on the brink of no deal at all, the forced-through COP29 text remains so detached from reality it’s as if Donald Trump is already in office. The world is on course for multiple degrees of warming and we’re back to not wanting to name the source of the problem as fossil fuels.
“On the number one issue of climate finance, rich countries have failed to make a credible offer to pay their fair share of what’s needed. Pull back the layers of the text and it’s a recipe for spiralling debt and deepening destruction in the global south.
“To rescue any chance of meaningful progress, rich governments like the UK must rapidly show they are serious about making innovative forms of finance happen. That means taking on the fossil fuel industry and the super-rich through permanent polluters’ taxes and wealth taxes, not leaving it to financial engineering in the City of London.
“COP30 must mark a transformational shift if we are to have any hope of avoiding climate breakdown. But climate action can’t start and end with these summits. If countries like the UK want to show global leadership, they must now commit to the goal of phasing out oil, coal and gas in rapid time by backing the Fossil Fuel Non-Proliferation Treaty. Willing countries must start working together for a fast, fair and funded end to the industry at the heart of the problem.”
