COP29: “Mega-polluting corporations driving forward crisis must pay up”, campaigners say

Date: 14 November 2024
Campaigns: Climate

Responding to the Independent High-Level Expert Group on Climate Finance’s report, which finds that poorer nations need $1 trillion a year by 2023 in climate finance, Izzie McIntosh, climate campaign manager at Global Justice Now said:

Climate finance is not a matter of charity – it is one of justice. The climate crisis continues to have horrific impacts globally but it’s clear that those facing the brunt of its devastation in the global south have done the least to contribute to it. Rich countries like the UK need to step up and deliver more climate finance, faster – and to fund this, they must tax the fossil fuel companies making billions at our collective expense.

In 12 months alone Shell and BP’s combined profits outstripped the combined GDP of the five most climate vulnerable companies – revealing the shocking inequity at the heart of the fossil fuel economy. It’s only right that the mega-polluting corporations driving forward this crisis are made to pay up.”
