Campaigners mark Phulbari Day

Campaigners mark Phulbari Day

Date: 26 August 2014

Today is Phulbari Day.  It marks the day when, eight years ago, a protest by local people against an open pit mine in Phulbari, Bangladesh resulted in  three people being killed and many more injured as the crowd was fired upon by paramilitary officers.

GCM Resources is the UK company trying to implement the mining project which, if it goes ahead, will displace up to 220,000 people and wreak environmental destruction on the area.

The Phulbari coal project has been on hold since 2006 due to intense local opposition and campaigning by different organisations including the World Development Movement.

The UK Branch of the National Committee to Protect Oil, Gas, Mineral Resources, Power and Ports in Bangladesh will be meeting at 6.00pm this evening at the Montefiore Centre, Hanbury Street, London E1 5HZ. Anyone is free to come along and ‘raise your voice to show your resistance’.
