Reacting to BP’s latest announcement that Q1 profits have exceeded forecasts, Dorothy Guerrero Head of Policy and Campaigns at Global Justice Now said:

Today’s heinous profits from BP are another kick in the teeth to the millions of people who can’t afford to heat their homes. BP has also quietly lowered its already weak climate targets, leaving us all to suffer even more from their climate damages whilst they line their pockets in a cost of living crisis. We need a permanent polluters tax on big oil to account for this rampant profiteering and their continuing unabashed role in the climate crisis.

The Big 5 oil companies (Chevron, ExxonMobil, BP, Shell and TotalEnergies), who have reported over $170 billion in profit in 2022 alone, are collectively responsible for 11.38% of global historic CO2 emissions, or 11.19% of historic CO2e emissions: https://www.globaljustice.org.uk/resource/making-polluters-pay-estimates-for-corporate-climate-debt-and-reparations/
