TTIP: the EU-US trade deal that threatens public services, progressive legislation and democracy in Scotland
When: March 28, 2015
The Transatlantic Trade and Investment Treaty (TTIP) is more than just a trade deal. It is an unprecedented transfer of power from democratically elected governments to trans-national corporations. For the first time, on a grand scale, corporations would be able to sue governments if they make public policy decisions which could harm their profits in the future. And while TTIP threatens to lower standards which currently protect people, public services and the environment, there is little evidence that it will bring the promised benefits of growth and jobs.
This fringe meeting at the Scottish National Party spring conference will ask what the SNP can do to protect devolved areas such as the environment, workers rights, health, education and other Scottish public services from TTIP? And how can the SNP ensure that people come before profit?
Speakers:
Eilidh Whiteford MP
Cat Boyd, co-Founder, Radical Independence Campaign
Stephen Boyd, Assistant Secretary, STUC
Liz Murray, Global Justice Now
Richard Dixon, Director, Friends of the Earth Scotland
5.30 – 7pm
Light refreshments will be available.
Please note that while this meeting is free to attend, you will need to have an SNP conference pass for the SECC to be able to attend
