Trade Activists’ Assembly

Trade Activists’ Assembly

Jun27

When: 27/06/2020

Stopping a toxic trade deal with Trump

Saturday 27 June, 10.30am-1pm

The UK government is now forging ahead with formal negotiations over a US-UK trade deal, which will have serious consequences for our public services, environment and social protections – and implications for the rest of the world too.

As part of a European movement, we managed to stop TTIP, the US-EU trade deal, in 2016. A huge part of that victory was due to the network of activists organising and campaigning in every part of the country, getting the word out and building broad opposition to the deal.

This Activists’ Assembly aims to help the process of doing that again, even with the restrictions of lockdown. We’ll use breakout ‘rooms’ on Zoom to have smaller group discussions to generate and share ideas about how to campaign locally in this unprecedented situation. We’ll also think about how we can specifically build support around affected sectors, such as the NHS, or the food system.

PLEASE NOTE: We had some problems with admitting everyone into the meeting earlier, but it is solved now. https://us02web.zoom.us/j/84929890588?pwd=MXZWaGlzSmNwcWRBaENGMy8zcWgzQT09

A rough outline of the assembly:

  • Opening session: welcome, recap on where we’re at, explanation of breakout groups (30mins)
  • Break/joining breakout groups (10mins)
  • Breakout groups, some pre-organised, but with space for proposals for others during the opening session (50mins)
  • Break (10mins)
  • Closing session: reporting back from groups, discussion of reportback, next steps (50mins)

Whether you’re organising locally already or not, we’re hoping this assembly can be a useful resource, and will help develop ideas which can be distributed more widely to build the movement against this deal.
