Power, protest and politics

Feb26

When: February 26, 2017

Want to challenge the power of the 1% and be part of a global movement? Then join us for an afternoon of discussion, debate and practical activity – as we start our youth network in Scotland, to support young people in getting active for change.

Sunday 26 February, 1.30pm-5.30pm
Renfield Centre, 260 Bath Street, Glasgow G2 4JP
Free event, with lunch included

We’ll be exploring the big questions we face – why are racism and economic inequality on the rise? How can we stand up against the UK government and its support for Trump’s terrifying and outrageous policies?

‘Power, Protest and Politics’ is for any young people interested in these questions. It will be an introduction to the new Global Justice Now youth network – a network for young people who want to challenge injustice. Anyone under 28 is invited, and lunch and refreshments will be provided.

Highlights

  • What’s the point of activism? Can political activism really change things? How can movements in different countries work together? What can we learn from the successes and failures of recent movements – such as Occupy?
  • Trade, Trump and corporate power – Over 3.4 million people helped to kill TTIP, the EU-US trade deal. But after this enormous show of people power, we still could be threatened by an even worse trade deal that could be struck by the UK and US.  Join a discussion on trade justice, anti-corporate campaigning and practical solidarity.
  • Precarious Trajectories –Voices from the Mediterranean migration crisis. A screening of the documentary that shows the effects ‘fortress Europe’ is having on the increasingly dangerous journeys migrants and refugees are being forced to take.

Plus practical campaign skills workshops
