Make Amazon Pay – Black Friday Action Day
When: November 24, 2023
This Black Friday, 24 November, we’re joining with the global Make Amazon Pay coalition to challenge the extreme corporate power typifed by the tech giants. Last year’s Black Friday saw protests, actions and strikes against Amazon at 135 locations in over 35 countries, and this year UK Amazon workers in Coventry will be out on strike both on 7-9 November and on Black Friday itself.
Building on our Resisting Monopoly Capitalism conference from March this year, we’re mobilising in various places and advancing our critique of Amazon’s economic model – exploiting workers, producing masses of waste and emissions to wreck the climate, and monopolising the basic resources we all need to live a dignified life.
There’s lots happening:
Demo outside Amazon’s London HQ
12 noon at 1 Principal Pl, London EC2A 2FA. We’ll be teaming up with War on Want, GMB, Hackney Labour, Labour Behind the Labour, Good Jobs First and Stop Shopping Choir.
Demo outside Amazon’s Manchester HQ
12 noon at Hanover Building, Hanover St, Manchester M4 4GW. GJN’s youth activists in Manchester are organising with climate and trade union groups in the city.
Support the pickets at the striking Amazon Coventry warehouse.
If you’re nearby, head down early morning to Amazon BHX4, Lyons Park, Sayer Dr, Coventry CV5 9PF to support the striking Amazon workers.
Host an outreach stall or creative action in your area
The best opportunity for outreach will be on the busy high streets on Black Friday (and the weekend that follows it). We’re inviting groups to run stalls and chat to shoppers about why we should Make Amazon Pay.
To help with this we’re working on a satirical newspaper detailing all of Amazon’s crimes – to add a touch of humour and help make the flyering entertaining as well as educating. We’ll be presenting it as though it’s an Amazon publication, celebrating all the terrible things they’re doing as corporate wins. You can be as creative or theatrical as you like in your outreach (or not, if you prefer a simple approach).
Get in touch to order copies of the newspaper, for tips on banners/placards messaging, and ideas for props to make an engaging stall. Contact us at [email protected]
