¡Democracia real ya!

¡Democracia real ya!

Feb28

When: February 28, 2015

‘¡Democracia real ya!’, meaning ‘real democracy now!’, is a free exhibition of street art by Rosario Martínez Llaguno and Roberto Vega Jiménez, members of the Mexican art collective Lapiztola Stencil, based in Oaxaca.

This collective was formed following teachers’ strikes in Oaxaca in 2006 which were violently suppressed by the state. Street art became a form of political protest, highlighting the range of issues which Mexicans face, and providing hope and inspiration. The exhibition celebrates the fight for social justice that the artists are involved with in Oaxaca and Mexico as a whole.

The pieces in the exhibition were originally created on walls in Oaxaca’s streets. Their recreation here by the artists was commissioned by Global Justice Now to tie in with our conference Take Back Our World.

This exhibition runs from Thursday 5 February to Saturday 28 February in Rich Mix’s mezzanine gallery.
