Action: time for the UK to Exit the Energy Charter Treaty!
When: 5:00 pm, November 4, 2022
Where: View on map
Campaigns: Climate, Trade
Action outside the Department for Business, Energy & Industrial Strategy – time for the UK to join the mass exodus of countries leaving the climate-wrecking Energy Charter Treaty!
📍 BEIS, 1 Victoria St, London SW1H 0ET
Why we’re taking action
Fossil fuel companies are using the Energy Charter Treaty (ECT), a toxic trade agreement, to sue governments who take climate action in secretive corporate courts.
👉🚪 While the UK is distracted by political shambles, France, Spain, the Netherlands and Poland have realised the risk the ECT poses and are out the door.
🤐 Whoever is thrown into heading up UK’s energy & climate policy, the ECT will continue hold the government’s climate action to ransom. It’s being weaponised against communities here and abroad: UK fossil company, Ascent Resources, is using the ECT to sue Slovenia over its fracking ban!
🤡 Join us outside BEIS to tell whichever clown lives there now: no to more fossil fuel extraction, no to fracking here and everywhere – and time for the UK to #ExitECT!

Fossil fuel companies are using the ECT to sue countries in secretive ‘corporate courts’ when governments adopt climate policies that hit their profits. Governments across Europe are gearing up to leave this climate-wrecking treaty.
But some prefer greenwash: we have until the end of November to stop the UK government accepting a so-called ‘modernised’ ECT that locks in at least 10 more years of corporate courts.
In November, the ECT’s member countries will be meeting to ratify the proposed ‘modernised’ treaty. Before then, we’ll come together in action to demand the UK government follow other European countries in refusing to lock in climate breakdown.
Come along with us on November 4th at 5PM.
