A training course for global justice activists
Do you want to get more active in the fight for global justice but not sure you have the skills? Feel frustrated at so many things in the world, but not sure how you can effectively take action in your community?
Our new online training course might be what you’re looking for.
During four evening sessions spread over five weeks, this course will train you in effective grassroots organising and campaign basics, including how to have an impact at a local level with Global Justice Now’s national campaigns to tackle structural injustice. This training is intended for people who want to take effective action in our local group network, but does not require you to be already involved in a local group.
The course will be a mix of theory, examples and small group discussions on a range of issues, including:
- Identifying your natural ‘campaigning type’ and group personality type, and how to read others, to build more effective collaboration
- Understanding different campaign tactics and how they fit together
- How to campaign successfully at a local level as part of a national (or global) campaign, including identifying targets, and building successful local coalitions
It will take place on Thursday evenings, from 6pm–7:30pm from 25 March to 15 April, with a break in the middle week. There will also be small exercises between the sessions which are optional, but recommended.
Places are limited, so we’re asking people to complete a short application form. The deadline for applications is 28 February. After doing the course, you will have the opportunity to have mentoring with a staff member from the activism team for the rest of the year.

About the trainer
Kirsty Wright has over twenty years’ experience agitating for justice around the world.
For seven years she led Global Justice Now’s climate justice work campaigning on issues from the UK’s climate legislation, to preventing the eviction of an indigenous community due to the expansion of a giant coal mine in Colombia. She was co-director of a small organisation engaging young people from marginalised backgrounds in social and environmental justice issues, has been the campaign coordinator for Oxfam New Zealand, and since 2017 has been a consultant to leading human rights and fair-trade cooperatives in the Palestinian Territory.
At a grassroots level, Kirsty has been active with movements such as Climate Camp, Liberate Tate and was a founding member of UK Uncut, which put corporate tax avoidance on the agenda. She has been a peace observer with Zapatista communities and worked with women’s rights cooperative in Nicaragua.
In all her activism, Kirsty is driven by principles of solidarity, building positive collaborative dynamics and bringing marginalised issues and voices to the centre. Recently she has trained in conflict resolution and anti-oppression work.
