Election 2024: Three questions for every MP candidate on global justice
By: Global Justice Now
Date: 12 June 2024
The next government has an enormous task ahead. It must heal divisions, not only in our own society but also around the world, where there is a chasm of mistrust between the rich world and the rest. We need to fight for a parliament that will champion global justice.
Question for candidates
Our three key questions for MP candidates focus on the global justice issues that have most been on the political agenda, and where candidates should be expected to have policies and personal views. You can read them below or print a copy of the leaflet to keep by your front door.
1) Climate
Q: Will you support a fast and fair end to fossil fuels?
The next five years will be crucial for the climate emergency, but the current government has taken us backwards. We need a global exit plan from the fossil fuel economy based on justice for people in the UK and around the world. Will you support a rapid phase-out of oil, coal and gas at home, and champion the Fossil Fuel Non-Proliferation Treaty to make this happen globally?
2) Gaza
Q: Will you back an arms embargo on Israel?
Israel’s assault on Gaza has been a horrendous collective punishment of Palestinian civilians. Britain’s uncritical support has left it complicit in war crimes, and ministers have repeatedly refused to suspend UK arms exports. Will you support an immediate ceasefire, an arms embargo on Israel, and ongoing justice for the Palestinian people?
3) Migration
Q: Will you offer safe routes for people to seek asylum in the UK?
The government’s Rwanda plan is a cruel and mistaken way to treat people who are seeking safety in the UK. But the answer is not more border guards. Will you support the introduction of safe routes for people to apply for asylum in the UK, so they are not forced to risk their lives in the Channel?
