Why we’re striking for climate and how you can join the action

On Friday 20 September, the world’s biggest climate demonstration will see millions of people taking to the streets to demand urgent action on climate change.
At Global Justice Now, we’ll be joining the climate strike and giving our full support to the young activists who have been leading the strikes for over a year now. This is a historic moment. It’s time for us all to stand together and take serious action to make this a turning point in our history. Will you join us?

Why #Strike4Climate matters

Big problems require big collective actions. And the climate emergency we’re facing today is huge. World leaders have failed to deliver the level of action needed to avoid the worst impacts of climate change. And the consequences of their inaction are already here.
For millions of people around the world, climate change is a crisis which has already arrived. Those most affected by climate breakdown are in the global south – in the countries that are the least responsible for carbon emissions, and the most impoverished by colonialism and a global economy rigged against them.
It’s going to take a mass movement to change that economic system. And we all have a responsibility to be part of that change. That’s why the global climate strike is such an important – and hopeful – moment.
Join in any way you can
While Global Justice Now staff will be walking out of our offices in London and Edinburgh, we realise that leaving work won’t be possible for everyone.
Whether you’re able to join the strike or not, there’s so much you can do to make sure we make this the biggest climate mobilisation in history:
- You may be able to join the strikers for a few hours or during your lunch break
- Ask your friends and family to join
- Join the climate strike digitally
- Change your social media profile pictures or banners for the week. You can use any of these photos for Facebook, Twitter, Instagram or LinkedIn
- Share the event on Facebook
- During the week of 20-27 September, follow the action on social media using the hashtags #Strike4Climate #ClimateStrike #youthstrike4climate and help spread the demand for urgent action
- Consider supporting the climate movement in any way you can – by joining a local group (including our climate network), donating, or volunteering
But if you can, I urge you to please join the strike on Friday 20 September, to make the movement bigger and our voices louder.
