Four ways to challenge the 1% this autumn - Global Justice Now Global Justice Now

ywmfj Summer has come to an end, it’s back to school, university and work – and it’s time to get organised and mobilise! At the general election and the protests against Trump, this year young voices have really come to the forefront of politics and we need to make sure that they carry on being heard. Fighting for a better world happens in many ways and they are all important. Here are four ways in which you can get involved.

1) Counter-festival at the Conservative Party conference, 1-7 October (Manchester)

Five days of demonstrations, cultural events, rallies, comedy, music and public meetings are set to take place in Manchester to publicly reject the government’s austeritydriven politics. On 1 October, Global Justice Now will be taking our campaign for trade democracy to the main march and we’re looking for activists to join us. We’ll join the protestors to talk trade justice, collect signatures for our petition and take part in a public stunt posing the question ‘who’s pulling the strings in our trade deals’. Come dressed in a suit for the stunt, or just as yourself, and we’ll take things from there. Details on our Facebook event.

2) Speaker tour: sick of corporate greed, 31 October- 9 November (Across the country)

Millions of people around the world suffer and die from treatable conditions because they cannot afford to pay for expensive medicine. Yet the pharmaceutical industry is the most profitable in the world.We’re hosting Sibongile Tshabalala of the Treatment Action Campaign in South Africa for ten days of talks across the country, as we launch our new campaign to put people before profit in the global drug industry.

3) National student demonstration for free education 15 November (London)

The idea of free education has returned to the political mainstream with a vengeance after Labour pledged to fund it by taxing the rich. This demonstration is demanding that education be free for all people studying in the UK. Education is a basic human right but privatisation is happening all over the world, turning it into a commodity. Come and join the campaign against the privatisation here in the UK.

4) Book a ‘Trading with Trump: a Brexit Nightmare’ talk

Donald Trump has promised Theresa May a UK-US trade deal ‘very, very quickly’ post Brexit. Not only could such a deal allow private companies to get their hands on the NHS and strip away the rules around food safety and labour rights, parliament would also have almost no say over the nature of the deal.. The rules that currently exist mean that these deals can be done without any public scrutiny or public oversight.

Our ‘Trading with Trump’ workshop covers the danger posed by corporate-led trade deals and the need to change the rules on trade.
