dscf2826It’s that time of year again – the time for New Year’s resolutions. Here’s my 10 reasons why running the Brighton Marathon should be one of yours.

  1. It’s a great way to explore a new city. Renowned for its scenic surroundings and vibrant atmosphere, Brighton is one of those places you can visit again and again. And you can enjoy some post-run traditional fish and chips by the beautiful and lively seafront!
  2. It will help motivate you through your training. That’s not to say it’ll be easy. But having a deadline to put in the calendar will keep you motivated to stick to the training schedule. Your goal is right there in front of you… you can do it!
  3. You can achieve a life-long goal. ‘Running a marathon’ is one of those things often found on a bucket list, but that many end up not following through. Well, this is your chance!
  4. And of course accomplishing such a massive goal you set yourself comes with a great sense of achievement. And you’re right to be proud – it’s a truly awe-inspiring thing to have done. And once it’s over, you’ll always have that memory of the incredible high of crossing that finish line.
  5. You support our campaigns for a fairer world. It’s no secret that our campaigns are dependent on people like you. Running the Brighton Marathon for Global Justice Now is just one of the ways you can support the organisation and wider movement for social and economic justice.
  6. You’ll inspire others. Most people don’t realise how much their words and actions impact others on a day-to-day basis. Running a marathon might inspire others to do one themselves or to do something completely different they thought was tough and near-impossible.
  7. Bragging rights. That’s right! When you’ve run a marathon it’s totally permissible to brag about your achievements in the pub. A lot.
  8.  It makes everything else seem easier by comparison. If you can get up at 5.50am to put on 6 layers of training attire and finish that 12-mile-run, the everyday obstacles that seemed so enormous before, don’t seem to bad anymore.
  9. Making new friends and being part of a community. Many fellow marathoners welcome newcomers because at the end of the day training for a marathon with friends is always easier. If you reach out to runners in your community, chances are that you’ll easily find someone to train with and perhaps make new friends in the process.
  10. You’ll improve your health. Not only does regular running strengthen your heart. It also keeps your blood pressure and high cholesterol at normal levels. And of course it keeps that colds away by improving your immune system.
