FAQs about Global Justice Now

You can sign up for a Global Justice Now membership on our website. We ask for £36 from our waged supporters, £12 from unwaged, £12 for people under 26 and £48 for supporters living overseas. As a member, you’ll receive our magazine three times a year informing you about current campaigns and economic justice news from around the world. You’ll also be able to vote in our AGMs and council elections, contribute to our campaigns and ultimately give us legitimacy and a strong campaigning voice. Please be aware that filling in your new address on one of our e-actions may not be enough to ensure your address is updated on our database as these run on different systems. We do our best to match these two systems up but this can take a bit of time.

All of our vacancies are posted on the jobs and volunteering section of our website, where applications forms for each job appear. We only accept completed application forms for jobs we’ve advertised – we don’t accept CVs, and we don’t use agencies to recruit staff.

If there aren’t any jobs listed on the website, then we don’t have any current vacancies.

If you are particularly interested in working for us, it may be worth visiting the website every couple of weeks – there is normally about 4 weeks between jobs being advertised and the closing date for applications.

Overseas applicants : please note that we can only accept applications from people who already have the right to work in the UK, and we are required to check that entitlement for everyone we employ. It’s not possible for us to get work permits for people who do not already have the right to work in the UK.

We occasionally circulate details of paid internships, one or two per year, and these are normally advertised on the jobs page of our own website.

But we do not offer any unpaid intern positions, following a discussion among members at our AGM who were concerned about unpaid employment.

Global Justice Now is committed to ethical standards and practice in fundraising. We abide by the codes of practice set by the Fundraising Regulator, the Institute of Fundraising and the Information Commissioner’s Office for data protection. But we also fundraise according to our own values and aims.

Fundraising with our aims, values and independence

Global Justice Now’s ultimate aim is to create a more just world by tackling the power structures and economic policies that create global inequality. Our values include equity of rights and opportunities for all people, democracy, transparency, independence, credibility and solidarity with allies and organisations mobilising for positive social change around the world.

When fundraising, we scrutinise our income against our aims and values to make sure they are not compromised. In practice this means not knowingly taking money from funders or individuals who make their income from abusing human rights or destroying the environment, or who are the target of our campaigns. In addition, we do not knowingly accept funds from people who are racist or respond to our campaigns with hate speech.

We also protect our independence by making sure that decisions on what to campaign on and how remains with Global Justice Now and its members and rather than other funding bodies. Our independence to speak out on complex and challenging issues is possible because of the many individuals who support our work, as well as a variety of trusts and foundations.

Democratic and sustainable fundraising

Having a broad and sustainable income base is important for the longevity of Global Justice Now and our campaigns. Individual supporters and a variety of trusts and foundations give us this democratic funding so we are not reliant on a narrow stream of income.

Respecting supporters and their wishes

Our campaigns are only possible because of our members, supporters and activists. So we are committed to being fully transparent and accountable to all of you. We endeavour to ensure that we contact you and give you opportunities to support our work in ways that suit you best. We will not contact you by phone, mail or email if you have told us you don’t want to be. And we will give you the chance to opt out of any one of these communications routes. In addition, we will not fundraise from people we identify as being vulnerable or who we suspect might be vulnerable, in accordance with our vulnerable peoples policy.

Communicating with our supporters by phone means we can have individual, unique, two-way conversations about our campaigns, how you’re furthering them, and other ways you can support our work if you are able. When we’re not calling you from the office, we work with a small, Bristol-based company called Ethicall, which specialises in charity calling and won the Most Ethical Company Award at the 2023 Better Society Awards. We work closely with Ethicall to make sure their callers meet our standards and have a clear understanding of Global Justice Now.

These unique conversations provide the opportunity to update you on our work and give you the chance to support it with a regular gift. Direct debit gifts are vital to our campaigns because they also give us the long-term stability to plan effective campaigns and react to new issues when we see the need. They also allow us the independence to speak up about complex issues other organisations won’t touch.

You can see the latest salary scales here. The director’s salary is limited to no more than 2.5 times the lowest salary for the lowest paid members of staff, both including London weighting. The current ratio is 2.23.
