A coalition of civil society groups and trade unions from across Europe have issued statements today saying that:

“Trade deals like TTIP and CETA have given oxygen to Trump. The best way to defeat him is to remove that oxygen – to stop these trade deals and build a democratic economy that works for everyone.”

Late last year tobacco company Philip Morris International’s (PMI) attempted to sue the Australian government for billions over the introduction of plain packing of cigarettes. This court case happened in a secretive court system, just like the one that they are trying to introduce in the EU-USA trade deal, TTIP.

We don't yet know how the negotiations of mega trade deals like TTIP and TiSA will affect Scotland - but this should become clearer over the coming months. In this month's edition, there are motions lodged in the UK and Scottish parliaments demanding that our national and regional parliaments are able to debate CETA before it is implemented. Please ask your local MP and MSPs to sign them!

A coalition of civil society groups and trade unions from across Europe have issued statements today saying that:

Global Justice Now welcomes the announcement of the Just Trade policy by shadow trade secretary Barry Gardiner MP at Labour Party conference this morning. Nick Dearden, the director of Global Justice Now said:
 
"We are delighted that Labour agrees with us that the toxic trade deals TTIP and CETA are an affront to our democracy and dignity. We also agree that the government's desire to join the secret TISA deal is about giving more power to the world's oligarchs
 

The death of TTIP is a victory for the ordinary people across Europe who stood alongside trade unions, civil society groups, activists and consumer watchdogs to prevent this massive corporate power grab.
