CETA update for Scottish activists - July 2016

With the uncertainty that a possible Brexit brings, this month's brief update looks only at CETA. We don't yet know how the negotiations of mega trade deals like TTIP and TiSA will affect Scotland - but this should become clearer over the coming months. What is more certain is that CETA will affect us, and there is still a chance to stop this Canada-EU trade deal. The next three months will be crucial for the campaign. Distancing themselves from nationalism and echoing the politics of the World Social Forum, they mobilise under the slogan ’Another Scotland Is Possible’.

Latest news

We welcome the Scottish Parliament's European and External Relations committee report's criticism of the Transatlantic Trade and Investment Partnership but stress the need for the Scottish Government to take a stronger position of opposition to TTIP in order to protect democracy, public services and the environment.

On the eve of Scotland’s international climate justice conference, campaigners have welcomed the Scottish government’s on-going commitment to climate justice, calling for further funds to help meet the country’s ‘climate debt’ to developing countries. But they have also warned the government to steer clear of corporate involvement in climate finance, claiming that thriving, democratic public sectors are the only means of tackling climate change in a just way.

A new WDM/PLATFORM report released today finds that transforming the Royal Bank of Scotland into the Green Investment Bank would kick start the green energy revolution. The research, by former Pricewaterhouse Coopers consultant, James Leaton, finds that it would bring 50,000 new green jobs a year, boost the UK economy, reduce the UK's carbon emissions and improve international competitiveness - whilst not increasing the budget deficit.
