Animals, drugs and superbugs

December 2016

Drug resistant bacteria are spreading across the world, threatening to turn previously treatable diseases into deadly killers. A big part of the problem is that the production and much of the use of antibiotics is in the hands of large corporations that seek profit over the wellbeing of people.but they will also be the first and hardest hit as cheaper forms of antibiotics become ineffective

Inviting Scandal - DfID’s dangerous plans to expand its controversial private equity arm

December 2016

Our new briefing reviews recent CDC investments and shows how serious questions remain about its impact on poverty reduction. It shows that there is still little evidence to support its current development impact claims which are largely based on assumptions – rather than proof. It argues that dramatically increasing its size and influence is a premature and potentially dangerous move.

Brexit Red Lines

September 2016

The decision to leave the European Union is the biggest political choice the UK has made in a generation. It has had serious knock-on effects for the UK’s political landscape, and has the potential to fundamentally change the future shape of the country’s politics. Unfortunately, some are looking to use the new situation to further roll back human rights, even threatening some of the key victories achieved by social justice campaigners in the twentieth century. Even the European Convention on Human Rights, which the UK has been part of since 1953, has been called into question.

Controlling corporations

September 2016

The power of multinational corporations is rapidly expanding and too often big business gets away with exploiting people, disregarding human rights and destroying the environment. But it doesn't have to be this way. Countries from across the global south have come together to push for a new treaty at the United Nations (UN) that could hold transnational corporations to account for corporate abuses under international human rights law.

0.7% on aid: a small contribution towards justice and equality

June 2016

There is more to fighting poverty and inequality than just giving aid. This briefing argues that to address the huge inequality of wealth and power that exists in the world, there needs to be fundamental change to the way the global economy works. Aid can play an important part, especially if it is understood as a form of international wealth redistribution.

The EU Referendum - The radical case to remain in Europe

April 2016

The choice in front of us on 23 June can feel uninspiring. Voting to remain in the EU aligns with big business and elite interests, while voting to leave aligns with the interests of racists, xenophobes and fundamentalist free-marketeers.

Migrant crisis or poverty crisis?

April 2016

There is no migrant crisis. It is true that thousands of people die every year attempting to cross the Mediterranean and Aegean seas. According to the International Organisation for Migration, over 25,000 migrants have died in their attempt to reach or stay in Europe since 2000.
